Northstar Megapack (1979-2022)
Backstory:Jean-Paul Beaubier was born to a French Canadian family in Montreal. After his parents die in an car accident he and his twin sister, Jeanne-Marie, are adopted by different families. Jean-Paul’s adoptive parents die only a few years later. As a teen Beaubier competes as a professional skier but once his mutant abilities develop he becomes virtually unbeatable and eventually bores of the sport. He becomes angry and rebellious and in young adulthood he joins the Front de libération du Québec - a militant separatist movement - but soon becomes disgusted with, and renounces the group’s violent tactics. He learns of a superhero group financed by the Canadian government called: “Alpha Flight” and joins them, adopting the codename Northstar.
And from that moment onwards he is one of the all-round sweetest good guys in X-Men history, as far as I know never having turned to the Dark Side of The Force. Even when he dies twice Marvel is kind enough to bring him back - which we’re obviously thankful for.
Although he is far from what the occasional misinformed person states as “the first gay superhero” his presence in mainstream comics did indeed provide us with a few “firsts”. (I’ve actually compiled a timeline list of “firsts” for gay characters below).
ANYWAY - I’ve finally collected all Northstar’s previous torrents on here into one folder and also added some “important character moments” and best story arcs to the collection.
Approximate reading order:
- Uncanny X-Men v01 01-02 (1979)
Northstar’s very first appearance as a member of a Canadian superhero team Alphaflight.
- Alpha Flight v01 (1983-1992) (Unfortunately these are only available as poor-quality scans.)
01-11 Alpha Flight’s first couple of story arcs with each team member’s “origin story” at the end of the issue. (Northstar’s story is told in issue 10) 106 The most important issue in Northstar’s life.
