Xander: Where is he?! Where’s the creep that turned me into his spider-eating man-bitch?
Buffy: He’s gone.
Xander: Dammit! You know what? I’m sick of this crap! I’m sick of being the guy who eats insects and gets the funny syphilis. As of this moment, it’s over. I’m finished being everybody’s butt-monkey!
He stole my heart forever with that scene, and now I’ve finally got a chance with him as the Buffy-verse has just been rebooted and Xander is gay.
So yeah, this is a Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic series, but to distinguish it from the literally hundreds of Buffy comics that have come before it “Buffy” has been dropped from the title. The series has been rebooted to the emergence of the Scooby Gang as a vampire-slaying outfit - we even get to “meet” Spike! - and Xander doesn’t need to “come out” because he’s just gay from the outset. (Having said that, he was already a kind of an Iceman sort of guy - kooky, lots of great lines, the butt of a lot of jokes and relationships with girls that just never quite worked out.)
Anyway, I’m really enjoying this so far. One weird thing though that’s a little off-putting - they have a different illustrators for each issue, with different styles to the point where it took me moment to realise that the seemingly random brown-haired dude that appeared in each comic was just Xander being drawn by 5 different people over the 8 issues.
So, read first the Buffy the Vampire Slayer 25th Anniversary Special with several one-shots re-introducing the Gang then continue on with issue #001.⏬
