Andy Warhol - Mario Banana 1 & 2 (1964) USA

Mario Banana 1 & 2 - 1964 - Andy Warhol Mario Montez, the gifted drag performer who also appeared in several Jack Smith films, suggestively eats a banana in both colour and black-and-white. Montez’s oral performance is also at the centre of Harlot, Warhol’s first synch-sound film, which is an underground ‘camp’ version of the Jean Harlow story, staged as a kind of tableau vivant on the Factory couch, with an off-screen soundtrack improvised by a trio of poets (Warhol can be heard giving directions). As a rule, Warhol’s silent films were shot at the regular sound of 24 frames per second (fps) and then projected at the silent speed of 16 fps, which has the effect of creating a kind of slow motion and increasing the running time by about 50 percent. It takes approximately 2.8 minutes to shoot 100’ of 16mm film at sound speed, which lasts 4.2 minutes when projected at silent speed. Until the end of the 1960s, the standard for 16mm silent projection speed was 16 fps. Around 1970, however, the industry standard for silent speed was increased to 18 fps in order to eliminate perceptible flicker; most projectors currently available run at a silent speed of 18 fps. This means that the Warhol films are now usually projected at a rate slightly faster than the speed he used in the 1960s. The difference is slight for 100’ films but becomes more significant as the length of a film increases. Running times for both 16 fps and 18 fps have been provided for silent films. … The running time of 16mm film is calculated as follows: At 24 fps, footage/36 = running time in minutes At 18 fps, footage/27 = running time in minutes At 16 fps, footage/24 = running time in minutes 1964.28 Mario Banana, 1964 16mm, b&w and color, silent; 2 versions, each 4 min. @ 16 fps, 3.5 min. @ 18 fps Mario Banana #1 preserved 1996 by MoMA, from reversal print 1964.28.5 Mario Banana #2 preserved 1996 by MoMA, from 1964.28.2 Cast: Mario Montez The group of single, unedited rolls (including one shot in color) that comprise this series may well have functioned as preliminary sketches for the performance that Mario Montez would soon give in Harlot (1964.30), Warhol’s first sync-sound feature. The drag actor (born Rene Rivera, in Puerto Rico) had appeared in Jack Smith’s films Flaming Creatures (1962–63) and Normal Love (1963–65) before joining Smith during the production of Warhol’s Batman Dracula (1964.13) and appearing in a Screen Test (ST222). His name was an homage to the 1940s B-movie actress Maria Montez, whose film performances as an Arabian dancing girl and a fantasy femme fatale were a significant influence on Smith. Montez encapsulated for Rivera a vibrant form of femininity: “She does everything with fire—nothing is pretended.” These rolls were shot in November 1964 and seem to represent the first footage of Montez that Warhol publicly screened. There is evidence from contemporary reviews and internal documents that the film was originally titled Harlot. Montez would go on to appear in a half dozen of Warhol’s feature films over the next three years as well as in works for underground filmmakers such as Ron Rice, Pierre Heliczer, and José Rodriguez-Soltero and in productions by avant-garde playwrights, including Charles Ludlam. 1964.28.2 Mario Banana #2 1964 Kodak 16mm b&w reversal original, 100’ Shot from the same camera angle as Mario Banana #1(1964.28.1), this roll captures Mario Montez’s performance in luminous and slightly overexposed black-and-white. The action is nearly identical. Montez brings a banana in from one side of the frame, removes and discards the stem, carefully peels away the skin, and, after a few preliminary licks, takes a prolonged bite. Here he accents this event by batting his eyelashes and even shutting his eyes, appearing to savor the taste. He takes another lingering bite, despite the impact of a flopping section of the peel, and again introduces some provocative thrusting motions near the end of the roll, which concludes with the completion of another bite.
