How do I explain this?
If you’re familiar with the Sandman comics then you’ll pretty much instantly understand this. If you’re a fan of The Sandman Netflix series you’ll appreciate it even if it takes awhile for you to understand it. By the time Lord Morpheus himself enters the story you’ll be completely up to speed. If you’re you’re familiar with neither the comics nor the series - read on, you’re still going to love this anyway.
The Sandman comic series originally ran from 1989-1996 and has had two further series since then. It’s now spawned a number of spin-offs and tie-ins - particularly involving the characters Death and Lucifer - now known as “The Sandman Universe”
Wikipedia says of the Sandman:
